WTF? COMBICHRIST?
I was reading an article today on top 16 bands to blow up in 2009...

Combichrist made fucking 14 place? What the hell?

Combichrist

Who: Based off album titles like “Everybody Hates You” and “What the F--- is Wrong With You People?”, it’s a good guess that Combichrist frontman Andy LaPlegua is an angry man. After making minor waves with the more synth-based Icon of Coil earlier in the decade, LaPlegua (originally from Norway) upped the aggro for Combichrist, mixing in some old-school industrial beats, distorted vocals and heavy metal guitars. Recently, the band’s “Frost” EP hit the Billboard Top Ten singles and dance sales charts; their latest full-length, “Today We Are All Demons,” comes out Jan. 20.

What: KMFDM, Ministry, Skinny Puppy…the spirit of those industrial rockers lives on in Combichrist, who strip out the nu-metal excesses (hi, Static-X!) and self-flagellating worldview (hi, Trent Reznor!) that doomed the genre. They do, however, keep the dancefloor beats and finger-pointing anger, while adding some ambient tones and Depeche Mode–style keyboards—most successfully on “Kickstart the Fight,” a duet with S&M rockers the Genitorturers.

Most likely to blow up: Nothing here screams radio hit, but the more synth-flavored “I Want Your Blood” has a demonic vibe that Marilyn Manson should copy, pronto.—KM

Okay, so what say you? Do you really think that Combichrist, after all these years, is going to blow up nationwide? Not just to the whole industrial/ebm/goth/etc/etc/etc scene, but mainstream?

I think they are very much going mainstream; personally I could care less, since I still like their music, but I am debating whether or not to see them on Sunday, as I half expect the place to be full of complete douchebags (esp. since I believe they're touring with that guy from Limp Bizkit's side-project)

I don't think *any* band goes mainstream in the way they once did. There are corporate marketed bands which is sort of the closest thing to the old form; but otherwise there are bands which get popular outside of their subgenres. Combichrist did that a while ago; I've had coworkers [not into industrial specifically] ask me for more combichrist. And it was clear years ago when I first heard "this is my rifle" that they were one of the few bands in the last decade to actually make a decent danceable appealing pop style song within the industrial scene.

As a huge nearly two decade long industrial fan; I have to say most bands since '98 or so just haven't put -anything- out worth buying that's labeled/associated with industrial, combichrist and maybe soman being the only exceptions IMNSHO.

Not saying combichrist is the bees knees, but it certainly fills the pseudo breakthrough popularity niche that KMFDM or Ministry once did better than any other attempts in the past decade.
